Sonority sequencing and its relationship to articulatory timing in Georgian

چکیده
This work asks how the syllable as a unit is delimited in space and time. To do this we bring together two theoretical approaches to syllable: sonority-based approach which emphasizes spatial organization, coupled oscillator model (Nam, Goldstein & Saltzman 2009) temporal organization. Many languages present challenges these theories, here focus on Georgian, problematic for both approaches, Georgian permits onset clusters of up seven consonants any sonority shape. Specifically, study examines relationship between gestural overlap shape via electromagnetic articulography. Drawing data from three speakers, examine two-consonant onsets that vary order place articulation. Using measures overlap, find (i) long lag consonant gestures, suggest language-specific (ii) largest rises smallest falls. These results neither phonemic recoverability nor hierarchical effect increasingly open constrictions primary motivator behind inter-consonantal timing. Instead, high degree falls ensures their tautosyllabic parse, would otherwise be threatened by intrusive vocoids. Thus, argue major motivating factor timing patterns observed, syllables emerge not solely either or properties, but interplay two.

Accounting for Sonority Violations: the Case of Georgian Consonant Sequencing
Georgian is one of several languages which allows consonant sequences not predicted by the Sonority Sequencing Principle (SSP). The goal of the present study is to formulate a new generalization regarding consonant sequencing in Georgian, one not necessarily relying on the SSP. This generalization refers to observed preferences for combinations of certain feature specifications in the sequences...
متن کاملArticulatory bases of sonority in English liquids
Sonority is generally considered to play a primary role in governing intrasyllabic phonotactics. In this chapter, we examine the phonotactic and articulatory properties of tautosyllabic vowel-liquid sequences in American English, and consider the implications for theories of sonority. Constraints on the distribution of vowels preceding liquid codas were first examined through lexical corpus ana...
متن کاملStructured nonstationarity in articulatory timing
Many experiments investigating speech articulation examine the influence of linguistic or paralinguistic factors on articulatory timing. The current experiment differs from these by focusing on unconditioned variation—i.e. statistical noise—in articulatory timing. The aim is to assess whether distributions of intervals representing the relative timing of articulatory movements are well-modelled...
